Alright plant lovers listen up if you think youve seen it all when it comes to succulents get ready to have your mind blown were not talking about your everyday echeverias or sedums here were diving deep into the weird the wonderful the truly unique succulents that look like they came from another planet these are the plants that make collectors hearts race and wallets open these are the specimens that transform a simple hobby into a fullblown passion.
Lets start with the rock stars literally the lithops also known as living stones these incredible plants have mastered the art of camouflage they look exactly like small stones or pebbles complete with patterns and colors that blend into their native south african habitats they even have a transparent window on top to allow light into their underground body they are without a doubt one of the most unique succulents you will ever encounter and taking care of them is a whole different ballgame compared to regular succulents they have a very specific growth cycle and watering them at the wrong time is a guaranteed way to kill them but when they flower its pure magic a beautiful daisylike bloom emerges from the crack between the two leaves.
Then theres the alien looking euphorbia obesa sometimes called the baseball plant this thing looks like a perfectly round green ball with subtle patterns and it just gets more interesting as it ages eventually forming a cylindrical shape native to south africa its another great example of mimicry resembling a stone to avoid being eaten its a dioecious plant meaning you need both a male and female to produce seeds and seeing them flower is a rare treat for any collector.
For something truly bizarre meet the trachyandra tortilis a plant that seems to defy gravity with its corkscrew like leaves that spiral out in every direction its like something from a dr seuss book and it instantly becomes the centerpiece of any collection it hails from south africa and requires very well draining soil and plenty of sunlight to maintain its unique form.
We cant forget the string of pearls but were talking about its much rarer and more delicate cousin the string of tears or the string of dolphins these plants create incredible cascading trails of unique shaped leaves that look like tiny green dolphins jumping through the air or tears falling from a vine they are absolutely mesmerizing in a hanging basket and while they can be a bit fussy about their water needs they are worth the extra effort.
For the collectors who love pastel colors and perfect rosettes the pachyphytum oviferum or moonstones is a must have the leaves are chubby round and dusted with a beautiful powdery coating called farina that gives them a soft ethereal blue pink or lavender hue they look good enough to eat like little candies but please dont they are very fragile and the farina doesnt grow back once touched.
Then theres the crested and monstrose forms these are not different species but rather mutations that cause the plant to grow in wild and unpredictable ways a crested succulent grows in a wavy fan shape instead of a normal rosette while a monstrose form has random erratic growth patterns no two are ever alike making each one a true living sculpture these mutations can occur in many types of succulents from cacti to echeverias and they are highly prized by collectors for their oneofakind appearance.
The corpuscularia lehmannii or ice plant is another stunner its not your typical soft succulent it has hard angular bluegreen leaves that look like they are made of ice or crystal it grows in a dense mat and when it gets enough sun the tips of the leaves can take on a beautiful reddish hue its a tough plant that can handle a bit more water than some other succulents but it still needs excellent drainage.
For a touch of the dramatic the aeonium arboreum zwartkop is a showstopper this succulent forms large dark purple almost black rosettes on long woody stems it looks like a beautiful dark flower and it creates a stunning contrast when planted next to greener succulents it loves plenty of sun to maintain its intense color and can actually handle a bit more water and humidity than many other desert succulents.
The conophytum burgeri or burger’s onion is quite possibly one of the strangest succulents out there it consists of a single pairs of fused leaves that form a peculiar onion shaped body with a translucent top its rare its expensive and it grows extremely slowly but for the dedicated collector its the ultimate prize.
Finally we have the astrophytum ornatum a cactus that is covered in beautiful white fuzzy scales that form intricate patterns against the green skin its often called the star cactus for its radial symmetry and it produces gorgeous yellow flowers when mature its a slow grower but its incredibly hardy and can live for decades becoming a family heirloom.
These plants prove that the world of succulents is so much deeper and more fascinating than what you see at the big box store each one has its own unique story and its own specific set of needs but the joy of learning about them and successfully growing them is what makes this hobby so endlessly engaging for plant lovers around the world.
