I had heard that Bear’s Paw could be a bit tricky to grow, needing just the right balance of sunlight, water, and well-draining soil. Determined to give it the best care, I placed it near a bright, south-facing window where it could soak up the gentle morning sun. I also made sure to use a gritty, fast-draining soil mix to prevent root rot.

Watering was perhaps the biggest challenge. Unlike my other succulents, which could tolerate occasional neglect, my Bear’s Paw demanded a little more attention. I quickly learned that it preferred a deep watering only when the soil was completely dry. I developed a habit of checking the soil with my fingers, ensuring I never overwatered and risked losing my precious plant.

Over time, my Bear’s Paw began to flourish. New leaves sprouted, each one just as soft and charming as the last. Seeing its steady growth filled me with pride and joy. The little “paws” became more defined, and the red tips deepened in color with adequate sunlight. It became one of my favorite plants, a testament to my patience and care.

One day, I noticed tiny offsets forming at the base of the plant. It was a sign that my Bear’s Paw was happy and thriving. Excited, I decided to propagate them. Carefully, I removed the small pups and potted them separately, watching over them as they grew into new, independent plants. Sharing these new Bear’s Paw succulents with my friends became one of my greatest joys, as I could pass along not just a plant, but a piece of my journey with it.

Caring for Bear’s Paw has been a truly rewarding experience. It has taught me the value of patience, attentiveness, and respect for nature’s delicate balance. Even now, as I watch my plant bask in the sunlight, I am reminded of how much I have learned and how much joy a simple succulent can bring into one’s life.

——Catherine Sinclair

I still remember the day I brought home my first Bear’s Paw.
